What is a Hygienic Play Center?
They are centers established to provide free service to preschool children undergoing cancer treatment, in order to provide the necessary play and socialization support with their peers, by observing the necessary hygiene conditions; they have a hygienic play area, family waiting area, psychologist interview room, office, kitchen, children’s and adult toilets.
In Hygienic Play Centers, games, educational activities and workshops suitable for the age groups of their young visitors are held. In addition to these, additional trainings such as ballet, yoga, drama, foreign language are regularly given to children by volunteer experts.
Special days such as report card days, April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, Mother’s Day are celebrated with children and families in play centers.
Why is it needed?
While healthy children can overcome simple illnesses such as cold and flu, children who are receiving treatment experience severe illnesses because their immune systems are weak. Therefore, it is dangerous for their health to come together.
Schools and play groups that healthy children attend are at a standard hygiene level, it is sufficient to do standard daily cleaning and wash fruits and vegetables in a standard manner. As long as children do not have allergies, they can eat any food given in schools and play with toys after a standard daily cleaning unless there is an extra situation.
The food and drink routines of children receiving cancer treatment are subject to rules. There are many foods that they are prohibited from eating and drinking. It is extremely important for their health that the air in the area they are in is clean and that there are no germs in the environment. Toilets should be cleaned with disinfectants before and after each use, and their toys should be wiped with disinfectants every day. They should wash their hands every time they come from outside, usually wear a mask, and everyone who comes into contact with them should follow these cleaning and hygiene rules.
A large and detailed disinfection process is applied to our Hygienic Play Centers every year. After this process, our centers’ playgrounds and children’s toilets are free of germs for 1 year. As a result of the hygiene inspections carried out regularly every 4 months by an impartial laboratory with ISO Clean Room Measurement authority, our Hygienic Play Centers are in the ISO 7 class. This result is the intensive care unit hygiene level.
It is important to recognize the possible psychological risk symptoms that may be experienced by the patient’s relatives and during the treatment of the patient in advance and to take precautions for the successful completion of cancer treatment. We provide free psychologist support to improve the patient’s quality of life and to help patients with strategies to cope with the disease. When children come to hygienic play centers, we mediate them to have parent-psychologist meetings. Especially during the pandemic period, our psychologists continue to conduct parent-child meetings face-to-face or remotely.
